a prophetic look into the days of Noah

While Politicians Paint Rosy Pictures, Americans Huddle Behind Locked Doors

We are told, again and again, that America is safer than ever. Politicians stand at podiums and point to charts showing downward trends in crime, assuring us that the streets are secure and the danger is fading. Yet a single weekend’s headlines tell a very different story. An intentional explosion rocks Harvard University’s Medical School. In New York, another shooting adds to the toll. Chicago sees 23 people shot between Friday and Sunday. In Ohio, nine people — many of them juveniles — are gunned down at an Airbnb party. And that’s just from a quick skim of the news cycle, not a deep dive.

The discrepancy between official narratives and lived reality is glaring. On paper, crime may be “down.” But for the everyday citizen — the man who locks his doors even when he’s home, the woman who avoids going out after dark, the family that installs cameras and buys a dog for protection — the sense of safety is not rising. It’s eroding. Statistics may soothe policymakers, but headlines and lived experience shape public trust. And right now, the trust gap is widening.

The Incidents:

Ohio — Airbnb Shooting The weekend began with horror in Bath Township, Ohio, where nine people — many of them juveniles — were shot at an Airbnb party. Police say the gathering was promoted on social media, drew a large crowd, and ended in chaos when gunfire erupted inside the home. The fact that children were among the victims underscores how violence is seeping into spaces once thought safe.

New York — Taste of the City Lounge shooting: A mass shooting at the Taste of the City Lounge in Crown Heights left multiple victims and several fatalities. Witness accounts describe a crowded late‑night scene that turned into a barrage of gunfire, with investigators treating it as a targeted, multi‑shooter incident. Whatever the official trendlines say, this is the kind of headline New Yorkers wake up to far too often.

Harvard — Campus Explosion Meanwhile, in Boston, an intentional explosion rocked Harvard Medical School’s Goldenson Building in the early hours of Saturday. Two masked suspects were seen fleeing the scene. No one was injured, but the FBI and local police are treating it as a deliberate act of violence. The symbolism of a bomb on an Ivy League campus is chilling.

Chicago — Weekend Shootings Chicago once again lived up to its grim reputation. Over the weekend, at least eight people were shot across the city, with incidents ranging from drive‑bys to disputes outside gatherings. While officials boast that shootings are “down” compared to pandemic highs, the drumbeat of weekend gunfire continues to define life in many neighborhoods.

California — Halloween night turned deadly when a Halloween party was interrupted with an individual firing a gun, killing one, and injuring another.

And this is only a selected example. Many other incidents occurred in the span of just a few short days, which only ramps up the anxiety of the people living all across America. Yet despite these numbers, leaders insist the streets are safe.

The Numbers (Mid‑Year 2025, Council on Criminal Justice & FBI data)

  • Homicides: Down 17% in the first half of 2025 compared to 2024 — about 327 fewer killings across 30 major cities.
  • Aggravated assaults: Down 10%.
  • Gun assaults: Down 21%.
  • Robbery: Down 20% (carjackings specifically down 24%).
  • Sexual assaults: Down 10% (and 28% lower than pre‑pandemic 2019).
  • Property crime: Residential burglaries down 19%, shoplifting down 12%, motor vehicle theft down 25%.
  • Domestic violence: The only major category to rise — up 3%.

Longer view: Compared to 2019 (pre‑pandemic), violent crime is lower in most categories, but only 38% of cities are actually below pre‑2020 levels when you look at rolling 12‑month averages.

But can these numbers be trusted? Let’s not forget a few things. Unreported crime is a real thing. Especially for those who live in areas and neighborhoods that are saturated with crime. Residents are often afraid to report crime, due to the apathy of local police and the very real threat of retaliation from gangs and criminals. For these people who are forced to live in areas that rival Caracas, Venezuela, often called the “murder capital” of the Western Hemisphere, they feel like there is no help, no hope, and no way out.

And let’s just admit the truth; critics argue that cities sometimes massage the numbers. Using methods such as reclassifying incidents that would normally hurt statistics, plea bargains that drop violent offenses, and even going as far as offering anecdotal information (i.e., man on the street interviews, local polling that is often unscientific) in order to create the appearance of calmness and safety. A real example is the story of Chicago, where both the mayor and the governor of Illinois are actively trying to resist Trump’s offer of sending in National Guard troops to assist local police. Note that despite the statistical decline, headlines like ‘23 shot in a weekend’ dominate public memory, not the year‑over‑year charts.

In one of those Chicago videos, there is a ‘man-on-the-street’ interview with an older couple, the interview felt staged — regular citizens rarely recite statistics off the top of their heads: yet this couple seemed to know crime was supposedly at the lowest rates in three years. As of October 31, 2025, Chicago has recorded 359 murders — 138 fewer than last year, but still nearly one per day. This doesn’t seem like cause for celebration. Chicago has faced these accusations before, especially when mayors highlight “historic lows” while residents still see weekend body counts in the double digits. Politicians tout “historic lows” while their citizens invest in security cameras and bars for their windows and doors. If this is safety, what does danger look like?

The Real Meaning Behind Everything

Today’s world is as a maze, with everyone promoting an agenda, a product, a service and a scheme. Politicians would have you think crime statistics are down, because it makes them look effective and re-electable. Security companies want you to think crime is up, so they can sell you products and services. Criminals want you to feel afraid, because fear makes you vulnerable.

As with a recent incident with me, where several scammers tried to take advantage of my naïveté, feeling isolated and alone can lead to severe feelings of vulnerability. But there is good news. We have a very real God, and very real promises in his word, the Bible. My personal struggles only show none of us is immune to being overwhelmed. But thank God for His word! The Bible tells us in the last days there would be times such as these.

While the world huddles in fear, we can begin to look up, because Jesus tells us our redemption is near. In the last days, times will mirror those of Noah: he lived in a time where apathy, violence, corruption and lawlessness were the norms, not the exception. Just as today, where we’ve become numbed to the parade of violence scrolling across our phones, computers, and televisions. But thank God that Jesus told us not to fear those days, but to be expecting a redemption.

We have nothing, nothing at all to fear for this world; we have precious promises in His word that nothing, nothing at all can harm us. The body is a temporary vessel; we’ve known that from the time we were able to comprehend our existence. And someday, one way or another, corruption must put on incorruption. These vessels we live in will get an upgrade. We don’t know exactly what that upgrade will be, but we know we will be like him.

Imagine yourself, lying back in a recliner chair. You’ve got a nice warm robe on, a nice roaring fire in a fireplace. You’re watching TV or perhaps reading a book. But outside the window is a blizzard: That is the condition of the Christian, while the world descends into chaos, we are wrapped in the warmth of his promises.

1 You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. 2 For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. 3 They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. 4 They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. – 2 Timothy 3:1-4 NLT

25 “And there will be strange signs in the sun, moon, and stars. And here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides. 26 People will be terrified at what they see coming upon the earth, for the powers in the heavens will be shaken. 27 Then everyone will see the Son of Man coming on a cloud with power and great glory. 28 So when all these things begin to happen, stand and look up, for your salvation is near!” – Luke 21:25-28 NLT

52 It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed. 53 For our dying bodies must be transformed into bodies that will never die; our mortal bodies must be transformed into immortal bodies.
54 Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die, this Scripture will be fulfilled:
“Death is swallowed up in victory.
55 O death, where is your victory?
O death, where is your sting?” – 1 Corinthians 15:52-55 NLT

37 “When the Son of Man returns, it will be like it was in Noah’s day. 38 In those days before the flood, the people were enjoying banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat. 39 People didn’t realize what was going to happen until the flood came and swept them all away. That is the way it will be when the Son of Man comes. – Matthew 24:37-39 NLT
